How many times is the word “mafia” said in The Godfather.
Zero. Not once.
The actual mafia was actively trying to stop the film from being made, and in the end allowed it to go ahead if the word “mafia” was removed from the script. As it only appeared once, the producers took the deal.
Shortly thereafter, one of the gangsters who led the campaign of harassment against the film makers was murdered on the same day and just a few blocks away from one of the onscreen murder scenes… for drawing too much attention to the mafia.
