    1. Kennedy was a billionaire in 2010 dollars, and would have been rated wealthiest ahead of Washington and Jefferson.

      Just two Presidents earlier, Harry Truman left the White House with virtually no savings and no income apart from an Army pension from WWI of about $100 per month. Congress later passed the Former Presidents Act which gave him a pension. Herbert Hoover, the only other living former President at the time also took the money despite being independently wealthy, to spare Truman the embarrassment of being the only one to take the money.
