  1. The South and North American red dots look like they’re the Atacama and maybe Death Valley. In which case it may have something to do with either temperature or lack of water.

    1. You’re pretty close with lack of water, but it’s not exactly that. Note that Antartica is entirely blue and they get very little precipitation.

      It’s something that is generally associated with low levels of rain.

  2. Hmm, there’s a few possibilities – cactuses, sand, salt, the level of life in the soil.
