Interesting Question of the Day – 22 Feb 2016

This scene is from the longest war in human history as far as we can determine.

punic war trivia

It FORMALLY ended in 1985, when a peace treaty was signed between the mayors of which two cities?  Also, to the nearest 1,000 years, how long did the war last?

      1. Ah ha! Clue!
Romans… And for years I’m guessing at least 2000 years… Civil or with another nation though…. *ponders*

          1. Your ability to successfully distract me from actually working is astounding! Kept it up! 🙂

Just because it officially ended in 1985 doesn’t mean it actually continued for that length of time does it? Is it a well known war? Or some random civil dispute no one would have ever heard of?

          2. There’s a reason that the word “formally” was written in capitals. It wasn’t actively being fought for all that time, but it never FORMALLY ended.

Also, it’s a fairly well known war.

          3. Ok. So assuming its a conflict that ended those 2000 years ago but minus the official treaty it could be one of the civil wars…
Or the Roman-Etruscan wars. Or one of the Punic Wars. Or one of the roman-Persia wars… If its not one of those I’m stumped.
For well known itd stick to Punic maybe… Not everyone knows Etruscan or Persian wars…

  1. And if it is Punic it’d have to be the third one as the second and third couldn’t have started as a separate war without there being a treaty for the first and second ones…

        1. Not it’s Rome. The mayor of Rome and the “mayor” of Carthage (which is held as a ceremonial title) signed a formal peace treaty amidst the ruins of Carthage in 1985, bringing the 2,134 year long war to an official conclusion.

          1. I know of people who can probably hold a grudge that long too…

What Is curious though is why they felt the need for the official treaty? Especially after so long? Was it cause they wanted a tax write off?
