Dutch reality TV series De Grote Donorshow ran in 2007 and pitted people who needed a kidney against each other in a series of challenges to win the organ they all needed.  It was subject to immense criticism.

  1. The whole show was a hoax, but it put organ donation back on the political agenda. (I think it won a couple of gongs, too. Some kind of TV award)

    1. It was a hoax, and it was designed to get people to donate their organs.

      Not sure about the awards, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

  2. It was a hoax designed to raise awareness about organ donation, which worked because thousands of people signed up to be organ donors after it aired.

    1. It did work. The next day there was a sudden surge in interest from people wanting to donate their organs.

      Additionally, all of the money raised from people texting in their votes was given to organ donation charities.

    1. Actually nobody got a kidney, because no kidney was on offer. They perpetrating a hoax to draw attention to the importance of organ donation. The woman supposedly offering a kidney was an actress, and the contestants were all actual kidney patients who were informed of the nature of the show.
